The Government has extended operation of amendments under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2022 (‘Amended Rules’) from June 1, 2023 to July 1, 2023.

NITYA Comments: The Amended Rules were supposed to come into effect from April 1, 2022 and the Government has again extended the same on June 5, 2023. This is 7th time that this has been extended. Such repeated extensions create more confusions within Industry.

 The 1^st extension notification provided that no prosecution will be initiated against the person who had already implemented above changes on labels w.e.f. April 1, 2022. Hence, Businesses can decide to implement amended labels without waiting for Government to have a final deadline, provided they implement all the amendments fully and not partially.
