Generation of E-Way Bill from E-Invoice portal

by | Dec 22, 2020 | Insight

We wish to apprise you regarding integration of E-Invoice portal for generation of E-Way Bill (‘EWB’) for taxpayers required to issue E-Invoice.

Recent news reports indicate that from January 2021, EWB portal will be blocked for taxpayers required to issue E-Invoice and they will be able to generate EWB through E-Invoice portal only. In this regard, Advisory has been issued by National Informatics Centre (‘NIC’) indicating process to be followed by such taxpayers for generating EWB. Advisory contemplates following three situations:

Option Information relating to EWB filled at time of generating E-Invoice

Information to be filled for generating EWB

I All information relating to Part-A and Part-B are filled

EWB will be auto-generated along with E-Invoice without need of any further information.

II Information relating to Part-A is filled including Transporter ID

Part-A of EWB will be auto-generated which can be updated by taxpayer on E-Invoice portal or by transporter on EWB portal.

III No information is filled

Taxpayer will need to generate Part-A of EWB by entering Invoice Reference Number (‘IRN’) or E-Invoice acknowledgment number on E-Invoice portal. Details of Part A of EWB will be auto-populated basis details filled in E-Invoice.

NITYA Comments: E-Invoice information is stored in portal for 2 days only. Hence, E-Invoice portal may show error if taxpayer attempts to generate EWB after 2 days. Therefore, taxpayer should either generate E-Invoice at time of removal of goods or generate Part-A of EWB within 2 days of generation of E-Invoice.
